Wilmington was settled as early as the 1600's in the Cape Fear area but the only real permanent residents made their home here in about 1720. The city was named in honor of the Earl of Wilmington, Spencer Compton who was the Prime Minister during the rule of George II. The first settlers were primarily British colonists that had moved north from South Carolina along with a number of slaves from Barbados. Slavery was a part of Wilmington from the very start as the settlers used slave labor to take advantage of the rich natural resources in the forests around the city. Over the decades the city has grown to its present day size with Wilmington, NC real estate suddenly being a much sought after commodity.

It is not just its fast growth and rich history that makes the Wilmington, NC real estate market boom the way it does. The city is the birthplace of many well-known figures of stage, screen and sport field. Wilmington can boast being the hometown of legends such as Michael Jordan and David Brinkley and famous artist Sugar Ray Leonard calls the city home to this day. Hollywood has also made its mark on the city and movies such as The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Crow and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End was partly shot and produced in this city. Famous television series like Dawson's Creek and One Tree Hill have also been produced in the city. It is obvious that even though it is not as well known, as one would expect, the city is booming and has a reputation amongst the greats of the nation and the world.

The Port City of North Carolina, as it is called, is a bustling city. The balmy subtropical climate promises cool winters with some snowfall and hot and humid summers. It offers world class education University of North Carolina at Wilmington as well as various other colleges and educational facilities.
